More and more, Australians are becoming desk bound.

Many people sit at a computer for too long for too many days on end. If you walk through any office in Australia you will see people slumping in their chairs and ignoring any and all OH&S standards their company or organisation might have.

To make matters worse, they sit down for hours on end, not even getting up for a drink of water. This is why when I create a program for my corporate training clients, I include a core component.

Working the muscles in the abdomen to give individuals the strength to sit up straight and engage those muscles even when they’re not active, can make a significant impact on the rate of back injuries.

I know many of my Balanced Mums love the core workout. Having a baby is murder on the tummy muscles and can take some time to rebuild. But we can rebuild!

Talk to me about a core workout that will change the way you move, improve your posture and reduce your risk of a back injury.

Tabata or Interval Training

So my Balanced Mums group training class had a few goes at Tabata training. Tabata is a style of interval training where you go as hard as you can for a short burst and then recover for the same period.

According to one of the mums who loves to know how many calories she’s burned, in those classes we were burning at least 100 more calories in the hour than in our regular boxing class or circuit.

Interval training is anaerobic, which means it doesn’t rely on oxygen but on lactic acid drawn from the muscles. Rather than continuous expenditure of energy, an interval typically lasts between 30 seconds and 2 minutes and you need to push past your comfort zone for this to be effective.

The nature of the training is that it forces you to stop and rest. But each time you motivate yourself to push a little longer or harder, you’re setting your body’s limit just that little bit higher.

Either way, it’s a fun and efficient way to burn off some calories. Why not ask me about trying it for personal training, group training or corporate training?

Has anyone said this to you lately? Your doctor? Wife or husband? Or (heaven forbid) your children!

Our behaviours all depend on a yin yang balance. The more sendentry you become, the more you begin to avoid exercise. The less you move, the fewer calories or kilojoules you burn and the more weight you gain, the more strength you lose and the less flexible you become.

It’s a spiral that starts when we stop moving, probably in our teens or early 20s. But it also happens right after we have children.

So what do you do?

If you do no exercise at all, getting a personal trainer or joining group training is vital to not just motivating you to start, but to keep going. I’m on the record as being a passionate advocate of training with a friend or in a group because I see the value my clients get from it.

If you’ve had a baby, get the all-clear from your doctor to join a group and give me a call. If you don’t like my classes, you don’t have to come back. But I warn you, you will make friends in my group training sessions and they will want you back!

If you’re like most of us, you might be finding it hard to juggle work, family and social commitments, let alone squeeze in time to exercise.

And when you’re stressed about how much work you have, and how much you have to do around the house, and how the kids are doing… it’s hard to find the motivation to put it all aside to put yourself first.

That’s why corporate training is a great solution for time poor people.

And as more research comes out to prove that a healthy employee is a productive one, more employers are introducing corporate training to their workplace. They recognize the benefits of group training to help team bonding, concentration and motivation and staff retention.

It’s not just the bosses who are coming to me to ask about corporate training, many employees are organizing the training and inviting the boss to come along!

Nirvana Personal Training offers corporate training in the following areas:

Circuit classes

Boxing groups

Core development

Injury prevention – including stretching and strengthening programs

And if you want something a bit different, now we’re doing hiking events. These are a great social exercise which can take you through some of Brisbane’s prettiest bush walks.
